A Reel can help someone discover a product and still get no credit in a checkout report. The opposite also happens: a campaign link is clicked, but the buyer would have purchased anyway. A useful tracking system makes these limits visible rather than hiding them in a grand “ROI” number.
Define the events first
Write down what each number means: published Reel views, unique link clicks, checkout starts if the storefront exposes them, paid orders, refunds and net revenue or commission. Do not add a comment count to sales. A comment such as LINK is an intent signal; it becomes a link click only if the person opens the destination, and it becomes a sale only when the order is confirmed.
Pick one campaign name, such as october_lamp_demo. Give each delivery route its own medium or content value: reel_bio, reel_story and reel_dm. The UTM builder can produce consistent URLs. If an affiliate network replaces or strips tracking parameters, follow its rules and rely on its own sub-ID or campaign field instead. Test the final redirect before publishing.
A small worked example
Suppose a Reel receives 12,000 views, 180 people request the product link, 130 DMs are actually delivered, 44 people click the link and four orders appear in the seller dashboard during the chosen window. The honest report is: 12,000 views; 180 requests; 130 delivered messages; 44 tracked clicks; four attributed orders under the seller's rules. It is not “180 leads converted” or “the Reel created four incremental sales.” The numbers are illustrative, not a Creator Lane result or industry benchmark.
If the dashboard later reverses one affiliate order, update the net commission. If a buyer used a different device, they may not be attributed at all. Put that limitation in the report.
Make a simple ledger
Use one row per Reel and offer. Record the post URL, offer, destination, CTA, launch date, link ID or UTM, measurement window and source of each metric. A second tab can hold order-level data if you have permission to access it. Keep customer identifiers out of a public report.
Choose a window before reading results. For example, review the first seven days after publication and check late affiliate reversals again later. A seven-day window is an analysis choice, not a universal platform rule. Avoid comparing a Reel's seven-day orders with another Reel's lifetime views.
Know when to run an experiment
If you want to know whether DM delivery beats the bio route, compare similar posts or rotate the route under consistent conditions. One viral Reel against one ordinary Reel is not a fair test. The DM ROI calculator can model assumptions, but its output is not an observed experiment.
The useful weekly question is: where did interested people drop out? Many requests but few delivered DMs suggests a setup or delivery issue. Many delivered DMs but few clicks suggests the message or offer is unclear. Many clicks but few orders suggests the landing page, price, stock, trust or checkout needs inspection. Fix the stage you actually measured.
