Affiliate Link in Bio, Comments or DM: Which Instagram Route Should You Use?
Compare three ways to deliver an affiliate product link on Instagram, with a buyer-side test and honest tracking rules rather than a universal conversion promise.

Affiliate links often fail before the product page loads. The viewer asks “where is it?”, sees a bio with twenty buttons, or cannot find an old Story. The solution is to map one Reel to one clear next step, then test that path as a viewer.
Bio link: simple but easy to bury
A profile link is durable and does not require an automated reply. It works well when you are promoting one offer for several days or maintaining a clearly labelled product list. Put the item mentioned in the Reel near the top. If the link opens a general storefront, use the item's exact name in the button. Remove stale offers and check that the network permits your landing-page method.
Comment: a request, not a link destination
A comment such as “LAMP” tells you the person is interested. A URL pasted in a public reply may be awkward to use and may expose tracking links in a crowded thread. A useful public reply can confirm that the requested item was sent, but the buyer still needs a route that opens on mobile. If you automate responses, make sure they are triggered by the person's request and test the actual delivery.
DM: specific and measurable, with responsibilities
A requested DM can carry the exact product link and a short context line: “Here is the lamp from the desk Reel.” It reduces hunting, but it also introduces delivery failure, inbox placement, opt-out and automation-policy questions. Track actual delivered messages separately from matched comments. Do not use a product request as consent for unrelated recurring promotions.
Example comparison
Run two similar product demonstrations with a comparable audience. For the first, put the exact item at the top of your bio page. For the second, offer a clear comment keyword and send the same item in DM. Use distinct network-approved tracking IDs. Compare unique link clickers, confirmed orders and net commission over the same window. This is a practical test, not a perfect randomized experiment; creative, audience and platform distribution can still differ.
Be transparent about compensation. If you earn from a purchase, place a clear disclosure near the recommendation rather than hiding it on another page. Check the network's current program rules and the advertising disclosure rules that apply in your market. Do not claim a fixed commission rate from a screenshot taken months ago: rates and reversals change.
If the Reel contains several items, use a keyword-to-product map only if it genuinely helps viewers find the one they asked for.
