Affiliate Link
Updated Jun 1, 2026
An affiliate link is a tracking URL that pays you a commission when a click converts into a purchase, signup, or lead. The brand or network attaches a cookie (or server-side click ID) to identify you as the referrer; you earn a percentage of the order value, a flat bounty per signup, or a per-lead fee.
For creators under 10K followers, affiliate is usually the highest-ROI monetization channel because it doesn't require a brand to know who you are. You can monetize a 2K-follower account from day one by stacking 6-10 programs across affiliate networks and routing clicks through a comment-to-DM funnel.
What you actually earn in 2026
- Amazon Associates: 1-3% on electronics, 3-4% on fashion and home, 10% on luxury beauty, 20% on Amazon Games. Most general-purpose creators land at a 3-5% blended rate.
- DTC brands via Impact / ShareASale / CJ: 10-15% per sale is the typical starter tier; 20-30% recurring is common for SaaS and subscription products.
- Stan, Beacons, and creator-platform referrals: 20-30% recurring monthly for the first 12 months.
- High-ticket programs (courses, masterminds, software): 30-50% on first sale, sometimes flat $100-500 bounties.
- Cookie windows: Amazon 24 hours; most networks 30-90 days.
How to actually convert
Raw link drops to a link-in-bio page convert at 1-3% click-through. The same link delivered inside an automated DM after a keyword comment converts at 12-18% click-through and 4-7% to-purchase — roughly 5x lift, because the link is sent inside an active conversation context, not buried under five other bio tiles.
FTC requirement
Every affiliate link is a material connection under 16 CFR Part 255. The disclosure must be clear and conspicuous in the caption or on-screen — the link itself is not a disclosure.
Example
Example. A skincare nano-creator joins ShareASale's Paula's Choice program at 7% commission with a 60-day cookie. She mentions one serum in a Reel, comments "LINK" trigger an auto-DM with her affiliate URL. The Reel does 40K views, drives 380 comments, 280 DM clicks, 24 purchases averaging $42 — $705 in tracked sales, $49.35 in commission. RPM: $1.23. Across 12 such Reels that quarter, ~$590 net from one program alone.
