Project Archive vs Rendered Master: What Lets You Revise a Video Later?
A rendered master preserves a finished presentation; a usable project archive preserves the ability to make defined changes.

A rendered master preserves a finished presentation; a usable project archive preserves the ability to make defined changes. Neither automatically replaces the other. Agree on future revision needs and retention before deleting working material. A project file alone is not a complete archive when its media, fonts, effects or linked assets are missing from the receiving system.
Documentation basis: Premiere project consolidation and archiving; DaVinci Resolve. The recommendations below are editorial analysis and original teaching exercises, not a hands-on product benchmark or a forecast of search performance.
What should the archive be able to support?
Name realistic future changes, such as replacing a price, correcting captions or creating another aspect ratio. The required assets depend on those changes. Keeping only a finished export may be adequate for playback, but it does not preserve independent control of text and source shots.
What can consolidation leave out?
Adobe's project manager can consolidate used material and retain selected handles. Review the selected sequences and options before relying on the result. A trimmed package is not necessarily a complete record of the shoot, and unused material may matter for a future version not planned today.
Which dependencies need special attention?
Check fonts, external effects, linked compositions, graphics and audio assets, including whether they can be transferred appropriately. Write down versions and unresolved dependencies. A project opening without an error message does not prove the image and sound match the approved reference.
How should an archive be tested?
Open a copy from the archive location with the original working location unavailable to the test. Compare the sequence against the reference export and make a small reversible revision. This verifies a practical restore path rather than merely confirming that a folder has a large size.
When is it safe to remove working copies?
Follow the agreed retention and backup policy, and verify the required restore path first. Do not delete the only originals to make an archive smaller. Resolve any missing material before cleanup, and make the owner of the retained package explicit in the handoff.
A practical exercise
Package a short completed project into a separate test archive. Reopen that copy without relying on the original media path, change one caption and produce a reference-matching export. Record missing dependencies and correct them before accepting the package. Keep the production sources intact throughout this restore test.
Before you decide
- Define future revision needs.
- Test a real restore.
- Preserve required originals.
