SDR or HDR in Edits? Find Why Your Reel's Colours Change After Export

Trace washed-out or overly bright Edits exports from source to playback. Choose an SDR or HDR workflow and avoid fixing colour with random filters.

A Reel can look natural inside Edits, pale in a saved file and surprisingly bright on Instagram. Before you lower exposure or add saturation, find the first place where the appearance changes. Otherwise, you may damage a correct source to compensate for one player's display behaviour.

This guide was source-checked on September 15, 2026. We have not tested every Edits version, phone or display. Treat the comparison method as a diagnostic workflow, and only use colour options that your installed version actually offers.

Know what the labels mean

SDR means standard dynamic range. HDR means high dynamic range: a workflow that can represent a wider range of brightness for suitable displays. Neither term is a synonym for sharpness, and neither guarantees attractive lighting or accurate colour.

Resolution describes pixel dimensions. Frame rate describes motion sampling. You can choose a large image that still uses SDR. Increasing resolution will not correct an HDR interpretation problem.

Meta's HDR video engineering explanation describes why it creates tone-mapped SDR versions for different viewing situations. Tone mapping is the process of fitting HDR brightness into an SDR presentation; it is not simply turning down a brightness slider.

Identify what you recorded before changing export

Open the original clip in a player that can show media information. Record any HDR indicator, camera mode and known recording settings. If you cannot establish the source type, write “unknown” rather than guessing from how bright the screen becomes.

On supported iPhones, Apple documents the HDR recording option in its camera-settings guide. Changing that option affects new recordings; it does not convert footage you already captured. Android recording controls and capabilities depend on the device.

Check every source category. A project might combine HDR camera footage, SDR stock clips, screen recordings and graphics. One switch cannot guarantee that all those pieces were interpreted correctly.

Keep original files, the existing project and a reference export. If your version allows a project copy, verify it opens before experimenting. Do not delete or overwrite the only master.

Compare four stages with one reference frame

Choose a frame containing skin, a bright object and a neutral surface. Record the timecode. Compare that same frame at these stages:

Use the same screen and stable display brightness for the first comparison. A phone in sunlight and a dim laptop are not controlled references. Automatic display changes can confuse the investigation, so record the viewing conditions.

Do not treat screenshots or screen recordings as perfect evidence of HDR appearance. They may go through their own processing. Use them to show a location or setting, and retain the original sample for anyone who needs to inspect the media.

Choose SDR when you need a controlled broad-delivery version

An intentional SDR version can be a practical choice for mixed-device client review or a project already built mostly from SDR material. It is a workflow decision, not a statement that Instagram cannot show HDR.

If Edits exposes an SDR output choice, test a short passage and inspect the saved file. Do not assume the label alone proves that every imported clip has been converted correctly.

For supported Apple workflows, Apple's HDR editing instructions describe creating an SDR version in iMovie on iPhone or iPad by turning HDR off in sharing options. Those are iMovie instructions, not an Edits menu path. Preserve the original and use a clearly named converted file if an external conversion is necessary.

Once a file has been correctly converted to SDR, do not apply another HDR-to-SDR conversion on top. Return to the original if you are unsure which transformations have already happened.

Choose HDR when the whole path is part of your plan

If HDR is an intentional creative choice, check that your source, edit, export and review device support that path. Inspect bright highlights without ignoring faces or graphics. An attractive highlight is not useful if the product colour becomes misleading.

Meta's November 2025 Dolby Vision article describes preserving relevant metadata for Instagram's iOS playback. It is specific evidence about that implementation, not proof of identical Android support or every Edits export path.

Review an SDR presentation as well when your audience or client uses mixed screens. Record remaining differences honestly. Do not promise that every screen will show an identical image.

Do not grade around an unexplained mismatch

If the original looks normal but the saved export becomes pale, first check input and output interpretation. Applying heavy contrast to the whole timeline can make the preview harsh while leaving the underlying mismatch unresolved.

If one imported stock clip is wrong while camera footage is stable, investigate that clip independently. Avoid changing the entire project to repair a single asset.

If all four stages show an unwanted warm cast, the issue may begin with lighting or white balance rather than HDR. Use our consistent-lighting guide for that separate production problem.

Worked example: a white jar turns grey

Imagine a skincare demonstration with an HDR camera clip and an SDR title graphic. The saved file makes the white jar look grey, but the original looks normal. This is an original illustrative case, not a tested Edits defect.

The creator records the first mismatching stage, exports a short sample with a deliberate colour choice and compares the same reference frame. If they decide on SDR, they preserve the HDR original and verify one conversion path. They do not add a brightening filter and declare the problem solved.

The pass condition is a natural, readable demonstration in the intended delivery—not a match achieved only at maximum phone brightness.

Escalate with a small, inspectable example

Stop changing settings when two controlled samples fail in the same way or you cannot identify the source colour type. Ask the editor, device maker or app support for help with a short authorised original and its export.

Include device, operating system, Edits version, available settings, reference timecode and the first stage showing the mismatch. Remove client secrets and personal footage from the report. A precise comparison is more useful than “HDR is broken.”

Frequently asked

Should I turn HDR off for every Instagram Reel?
Not necessarily. SDR can simplify mixed-device review, while an intentional HDR workflow can also be appropriate. Decide from your footage, editing path and review options rather than a universal rule.
Does turning off HDR recording fix videos I already made?
No. A camera recording setting applies to future recordings. Existing HDR footage needs a deliberate conversion if you want an SDR version.
Why does the same Reel look different on two phones?
Display capability, brightness, viewing conditions, player behaviour and the served video version can differ. First compare the same file on one screen, then document cross-device differences separately.
