Why iPhone Video Looks Washed Out: An HDR-to-SDR Workflow

Trace washed-out iPhone footage through source, project, export and playback settings, with a cautious Final Cut Pro HDR-to-SDR workflow and diagnostic log.

Your iPhone clip looks bright and colourful in one app, then pale, too dark or oddly saturated after editing. Increasing contrast until it looks better on one screen can make the next export worse.

First trace the file through four stages: source footage, editing project, exported file and playback app. HDR-to-SDR conversion is one possible cause, not a diagnosis for every washed-out video.

This guide gives a cautious workflow for Final Cut Pro on Mac and an original diagnostic worksheet. No source clip was supplied or tested for this article, so the example log is hypothetical.

Decide whether the deliverable should be HDR or SDR

HDR is not a filter that every video needs removed. If your client or delivery workflow asks for HDR, keep a properly managed HDR version. If the required deliverable is SDR, make a controlled SDR version and preserve the original.

Apple explains that Final Cut Pro uses media colour profiles, project settings and display profiles to map the image through editing and export. This is why the same-looking file extension does not tell you the whole colour workflow. Apple's introduction to wide colour gamut and HDR

Write the delivery requirement at the top of your notes: “SDR Rec. 709 review file,” for example. If nobody has specified one, agree on the intended playback and delivery with the person approving the video.

Do not rename a file “SDR” and assume it has been converted.

Check what the source actually is

Keep an untouched copy of the original camera file. A version downloaded from messaging or social media may already have been transformed.

Record the camera app and recording setting if you know them. Then inspect the clip's metadata in your editor. Note the colour space and transfer characteristics, not only resolution and codec.

An iPhone recording is not automatically HDR. Log footage is also not the same thing as ready-to-view HDR footage. A codec name such as ProRes describes encoding, not a complete display interpretation.

If you cannot identify the source, pause before applying a random LUT or overriding its tag. Ask for the original or the camera settings. The right conversion depends on what the pixels represent.

Locate the first stage where the appearance changes

Use a short segment with a face, a light area containing detail and a darker area. Avoid judging only a sunset or an effect-heavy shot.

Keep the viewing conditions as similar as possible. A bright phone outdoors and a laptop in a dark room are not a useful controlled comparison.

Do not use a screenshot as the only evidence. Record the actual file, app and display used. A screenshot can introduce another colour-handling step.

Try a clean SDR project with one clip

Work in a duplicate or a small test project, not directly on your only finished edit.

  1. Preserve the original media and note the existing settings.
  2. Create a short SDR Rec. 709 test project.
  3. Add the representative source clip.
  4. Review the automatically applied colour handling before adding a creative grade.

In current Final Cut Pro, Color Conform normally converts a clip when its source colour space differs from the project. If a manual conversion is necessary, select the clip, open the Video inspector and set Color Conform's Type to Manual. Choose HDR (HLG) to SDR or HDR (PQ) to SDR only when it matches the source. Do not select every conversion until one happens to look attractive. The purpose is correct interpretation before creative adjustment.

If the clip already looks correct through automatic handling, another conversion can be the problem rather than the solution.

Separate a transform from a grade

A transform maps the source into the intended working or delivery space. A grade makes creative exposure, contrast and colour choices within that workflow.

A washed-out image can tempt you to add a strong contrast curve. Before doing so, inspect the effect list for duplicate transforms, a camera LUT meant for a different source or an old correction added to compensate for incorrect interpretation.

Temporarily compare relevant effects in the test project and write down each change. Keep only changes you can explain. Do not overwrite source metadata just to force the viewer to display a different look.

Once the technical handling is consistent, make modest creative adjustments for the SDR version. Expect to review bright highlights rather than assuming an HDR image can keep exactly the same brightness impression in SDR.

Export a short test and reopen it

Check that the export's colour settings match the intended SDR project. Give the test a name that records its purpose and version.

Reopen the exported file in a fresh, appropriately configured SDR project or another known colour-managed playback path. Compare the same moments, not different frames.

If the local export agrees with the timeline but the uploaded version changes, investigate the upload and playback stage next. Do not immediately compensate in the source grade for a problem that may exist only in one app.

Wait for the platform's processing to finish before judging the available playback versions. Keep the exact uploaded file so you can repeat the comparison.

Use a log instead of a collection of guesses

For a real test, replace every unknown with an observation. “Looks bad” is less useful than “window detail disappears only in the uploaded version on this phone.”

Change one stage at a time. If you change the colour space, LUT, contrast and export preset together, a better result will not tell you which change mattered.

Know when to stop adjusting

A practical pass is a correctly identified source, one explained conversion, a matching export and an acceptable review in the intended viewing path.

You cannot guarantee identical appearance on every screen. The goal is a sound file and a repeatable process, not endless compensation for unrelated display settings.

Save the SDR delivery separately from your original and any HDR master. Include the source, project and export settings in the handoff notes. The next person should not have to reverse-engineer why one version looks different.

Frequently asked

Should I apply an HDR-to-SDR LUT to every iPhone clip?
No. Identify the source and the project first. Some clips are SDR already, and an editor may already apply automatic conversion. A second transform can make the image worse.
Should I use both Color Conform and HDR Tools in Final Cut Pro?
Apple says the two effects are additive and advises using one or the other on a clip. Check for duplicate conversion when troubleshooting.
Does this mean I should stop recording HDR?
Not necessarily. Choose a capture and delivery workflow that suits the project. Preserve originals and make a separately reviewed SDR version when SDR is required.
