Edits Won't Export Your Video? A Draft-Safe Troubleshooting Checklist
Diagnose an Edits export that stalls, crashes or never saves. Protect your draft, separate rendering from sharing and test one change at a time.

An Edits export can fail in several ways: the progress indicator stops, the app closes, a file never appears, or the video saves but will not share to Instagram. Start by deciding which one happened. “Export failed” is not yet a diagnosis.
Meta describes both direct sharing and watermark-free export in its Edits introduction. Treat those as separate stages when troubleshooting. This article was source-checked on September 15, 2026, not tested hands-on across phones. Exact labels and available settings depend on your installed version.
Protect the project before you try a fix
Make sure your source clips and audio open outside Edits. Keep a copy on another location you control, and save your script, corrected captions and editing notes separately. If a project-copy feature is present, confirm the copy opens before changing it.
Take screenshots of the timeline and export settings. Those references may help you rebuild a short edit, but neither screenshots nor a finished video preserve every editable layer. Do not assume signing back into Instagram will restore a local draft.
Avoid deleting Edits, clearing its storage or signing out as a first troubleshooting step. Apple's app troubleshooting page explicitly warns that deleting an app may lose stored data. Google's Pixel guidance separately warns that clearing app data erases saved information.
Find the stage that failed
| Observation | Next check |
|---|---|
| Export stops while rendering | Record the percentage, elapsed time and project details. |
| Edits closes during export | Note whether a small new project also closes the app. |
| Export says complete, but no video is visible | Check the save destination, access permission and newest files. |
| Saved file opens, but direct sharing fails | Keep that file; investigate the sharing stage separately. |
| File saves, but looks wrong | Use the settings, colour or audio guide for that specific defect. |
A progress percentage is not a reliable timeline timecode. “Stops at 60%” does not prove that the clip sixty percent through the video is broken. Use a short controlled test to narrow the cause.
Write down what “stuck” means: how long you waited and whether the progress ever changed. There is no trustworthy universal timeout for every phone, duration and effect combination.
Check storage and source availability
Rendering may need working space as well as room for the finished file. Inspect free device storage before creating more failed exports. Apple explains where to review it in iPhone storage settings. Cloud storage capacity is not the same as free space on the phone.
Free room only by moving or removing files you have independently backed up and verified. Do not delete clips used by the project. Also check that imported originals are actually available to open, rather than only showing cloud thumbnails.
If the app reports completion but you cannot find a file, inspect the destination offered in the export flow and your device's media-access settings. Grant only the access needed for the task; do not broadly change unrelated permissions. Search by creation time and play any candidate file all the way through.
Run a small clean-project test
Create a separate project from a short original clip you are allowed to use. Keep it simple: no music import, captions, overlays, speed changes or external assets. Choose an available modest export setting and record it.
If that test also fails, repeated changes to your main timeline are unlikely to help immediately. Preserve the work, then reopen the app, restart the phone and check for official updates. Avoid doing this during an active save. Try the same small test again so the result is comparable.
If the clean project succeeds, the problem may relate to the larger project, a particular source or the work required to render it. That narrows the search; it does not establish a defective clip or hardware fault.
Isolate a suspect without dismantling the original
Use a verified copy if your version supports one. Otherwise recreate a short passage in a separate project from the originals. Begin with the passage containing a recently added asset, unusual effect or clip from another editor.
Add one element at a time: base clip, then text, then an overlay, then audio. Export the same short passage after each meaningful change. Record what changed and what happened. Do not remove everything at once and conclude that one particular item was responsible.
If a specific imported file repeatedly prevents the small test from exporting, return to its original source. A fresh, deliberate export from the originating editor may be worth comparing. Preserve the original and inspect duration, picture and sound before using any replacement.
If only a more demanding output fails, try one lower available resolution as a diagnostic. Success can help meet a deadline if quality is acceptable, but it does not prove that your phone never supports higher resolution or that lowering resolution is a permanent fix. See choosing Edits export settings.
Worked example: saving succeeds, sharing fails
Imagine a creator has finished a product tutorial. Edits produces a local file that plays fully, but direct sharing returns an error. This is an original illustrative scenario, not a verified app incident.
The useful conclusion is that rendering succeeded for that file. The creator saves it safely, records the sharing message, and checks the normal Instagram posting route when ready to publish. They review account, caption and audience choices before posting.
They do not delete all the timeline effects or rebuild captions, because those changes do not investigate the failing stage. A normal upload can be a deadline fallback, not proof that the direct-sharing issue is fixed.
Stop when further attempts risk the draft
Stop if the phone displays a temperature warning, the project no longer opens, the same small test repeatedly crashes, or you are considering an action that could erase unbacked work. Preserve your evidence and contact the developer through the available app or store support route.
Send phone model, operating system, Edits version, free device space, project duration, selected export settings, exact failure stage and a short non-sensitive reproduction. State whether the clean test succeeds.
If a deadline requires another editor, rebuild from original media and your saved notes. Check the replacement completely before publishing. A preserved draft and a clear diagnosis are more valuable than another unexplained retry.
