Reels Bonus
Also known as: Reels Play Bonus, Bonus Program
Updated Jun 1, 2026
The Reels Play Bonus was Meta's invite-only payout program that paid creators a flat amount for hitting view thresholds on Reels — typically $1,000-$35,000 per 30-day cycle, capped on a sliding scale. Launched in mid-2021 as the bluntest part of Meta's "we are very serious about competing with TikTok" spend, it paid out hundreds of millions before Meta wound it down.
The program ended in March 2023 in the United States, with Adam Mosseri publicly saying Instagram "couldn't afford to run it." Other regions phased out through late 2023 and into 2024. Brief invite-only successors followed — a Q4 2023 "holiday bonus," a 2024 "Spring Bonus" that capped at $30,000 over 30 days for select creators in the US, Japan, and South Korea — but none scaled. As of 2026, there is no general-availability view-based payout program on Instagram.
What replaced it
Three things, none of which are a direct one-to-one swap:
- Pay-per-view brand deals — the closest analog. Brands pay creators a CPM (typically $5-$50 per 1,000 views) for sponsored Reels, tracked via the Branded Content API.
- Subscriptions and gifts — Instagram's recurring-revenue plays for fans. Lower ceiling than view-based payouts but more predictable.
- Comment-to-DM funnels — creators monetize directly by capturing intent off a viral Reel and sending viewers to affiliate links or product pages. Higher effective RPM than the bonus program ever paid.
Why it matters historically
The bonus program is the reason "creators get paid per view on Instagram" is the most stubborn myth in the space — people who heard about it in 2021-2022 still ask whether they qualify. The honest answer in 2026: no view-based program is open. If you want money per view, you sign a pay-per-view brand deal or run a DM funnel. See how to monetize Reels in 2026 for the full menu.
