Edits Keyframes Explained: Plan a Smooth Zoom, Move and Hold

Understand Edits keyframes with a four-point zoom exercise, motion troubleshooting and a clear fallback when the needed control is unavailable.

A keyframe is a marker that says: at this time, this part of the image should look like this. A second marker tells the editor where it should end up. The editor creates the change between them.

That is enough to plan a small zoom toward a product detail, move an overlay into place or hold a framing before moving again. The useful question is not “How many keyframes can I add?” It is “What does this movement help the viewer notice?”

This guide provides a source-checked explanation and original timing exercises, not a device-tested Edits demonstration. We do not claim that every property or menu is identical on iPhone and Android.

Start by checking the actual layer

Open a short practice project with footage you own. Select the video clip or overlay you want to animate. Look for the keyframe controls available for that selected item and identify which properties can change.

Do this before planning a complicated effect. A clip, text layer, sticker and effect may expose different controls. Finding a general effects menu does not prove that the selected property supports keyframes.

Meta's April 2026 article describes richer templates containing overlays, keyframes and video effects as a future expansion. That statement is about what templates can contain, not an announcement that basic keyframe editing is still unavailable. It is also not a complete device-by-device list of current motion controls. The exercises below describe the state you should create. Use them where your installed editor exposes the needed motion controls. If it does not, the final section gives a workable alternative.

Understand the three decisions behind a move

Every small animation needs:

  1. A starting state: the initial size and position.
  2. An ending state: the final size and position.
  3. A duration: how long the change takes.

A gentle zoom might begin at the original framing and finish slightly closer one second later. The same change over a tenth of a second feels abrupt. The same change over five seconds feels more like a slow push.

This is the general keyframe model used in editors: values are set at times and the software calculates the change between them. Adobe documents that model explicitly. Adobe's keyframe explanation

Avoid changing size, position and rotation together on your first attempt. If something jumps, it becomes difficult to tell which decision caused it.

Make a six-second zoom-and-hold exercise

Use a steady clip of a notebook or another object with one clear detail. Place the useful detail near the centre before beginning.

The following values are an original planning example. “100%” means your chosen starting size, not a promise that Edits displays this numeric field.

Create a marker for the starting state. Move the playhead to the next planned time before adding or changing another state. Check that a new marker exists where you expect it. Do not assume a gesture always creates one automatically.

Play the full six seconds. The image should stay still for the opening hold, move once, then remain still again. Adjust the exercise to your app's actual control range and your source quality.

Why your zoom may start too early

If you set only a marker at zero seconds and another at two seconds, the change begins immediately. To hold first, you need the starting state again at the time when movement should begin.

That is why the example repeats the original framing at one second. The two matching starting states establish the hold. The later pair establishes the closer hold.

If the clip keeps moving after the intended end, inspect later markers. An accidental extra value can extend the motion. Remove only the unintended marker, after confirming what it controls.

Keep the camera's original movement in mind. Your added zoom may be still while the person in the footage continues leaning forward. Keyframes do not freeze real motion inside a video.

Move an overlay without making viewers chase it

For an annotation, decide its final readable position first. For example, a pointer might sit beside a notebook checkbox without covering the writing.

An original timing plan could be:

  • 0.0–0.4 seconds: no annotation yet.
  • 0.4–0.7 seconds: the annotation makes a small move into its final position.
  • 0.7–3.0 seconds: it stays still while the action is explained.
  • After 3.0 seconds: it leaves or the layer ends.

Use this only if the overlay has the required controls. Otherwise, a timed still annotation accomplishes most of the same job. A long travel across the screen is rarely necessary for a small callout.

Do not apply a video-wide zoom when you only mean to move a label. Always confirm the selected layer before editing.

Fix wobble, soft details and exposed edges

A movement can look smooth while creating other problems. Inspect the picture throughout the move, not only at its endpoints.

If a border appears, your framing no longer fills the canvas. Reduce the move or reposition without stretching the object. If text becomes soft, the crop may be too aggressive for the source. A real close-up shot can be clearer than enlarging a compressed wide shot.

If the target drifts off centre, adjust the relevant position states as well as size. Use the smallest correction needed. Adding more points everywhere can create a visibly wandering path.

If a curve or easing control is available, compare a subtle setting with the default. Do not assume an advanced graph editor or motion-blur option exists just because another app has one.

Use a fallback that still explains the idea

When the needed property is unavailable, cut from a wider shot to a real close-up. Hold the close-up while you explain the detail. For a label, use a timed still layer. These are legitimate editing choices, not failed animations.

If continuous custom motion is essential, finish that short segment in an editor with documented controls. In Premiere, select the clip, enable animation for the relevant property in Effect Controls, and set values at the required times. Adobe's instructions for adding keyframes

Export only the finished segment when practical, preserve the source project and review the imported result. Do not repeatedly export the whole video for every small change.

Finally, watch the finished Reel at normal speed. The best result is a viewer noticing the useful detail, not wondering why the entire picture is moving.

Frequently asked

Why does my Edits zoom begin before I want it to?
Check whether there is a marker holding the original framing at the intended start of movement. A start marker at zero and an end marker later usually create a change across that whole interval.
Can every Edits layer use the same keyframe controls?
Do not assume that. Select the specific clip, text or overlay and check the properties available in your version. The exercise can be adapted or replaced with a timed still layer.
Do I need keyframes for every close-up?
No. A cut to a real close-up can be clearer and simpler than a digital zoom, especially when the original shot is already soft.
