HDR vs SDR for Client Review: Prevent a Color Approval Mismatch
A client cannot reliably approve color if the review copy and viewing environment do not represent the intended delivery.

A client cannot reliably approve color if the review copy and viewing environment do not represent the intended delivery. HDR and SDR should be treated as defined output workflows, not interchangeable quality labels. Agree on the deliverable, manage the conversion deliberately and compare the exported file. Do not change the grade repeatedly to satisfy unexplained screenshots from different screens.
Documentation basis: Premiere color-management options; Premiere HDR-to-SDR tone mapping. The recommendations below are editorial analysis and original teaching exercises, not a hands-on product benchmark or a forecast of search performance.
What should be agreed before color work?
Record the intended output, review device and publishing destination. Ask whether an SDR viewing copy is needed alongside an HDR master. Without this agreement, two people can judge different representations of the same footage and mistake a display or conversion issue for an editing error.
Why can bright phone footage look different later?
Check the source, sequence and output color handling before adjusting exposure by eye. Adobe documents HDR-to-SDR tone mapping as a conversion step. That does not prove every mismatch is tone mapping, so keep the original export and compare a controlled sample before changing the whole project.
How should a review copy be labeled?
State its purpose, output format and version in the delivery note. Distinguish a convenience preview from a color-critical master. Ask reviewers to use the agreed file rather than a messaging-app re-encode or a screenshot, which introduces another uncontrolled part of the viewing chain.
What should you inspect in the sample?
Include skin, bright highlights, dark detail and graphics from the real project. Check the actual export in the agreed playback route. A single attractive landscape frame is not enough to judge whether faces, subtitles and branded colors remain appropriate throughout the finished video.
When should a color complaint trigger a new grade?
First reproduce the complaint using the same version and viewing path. If the intended export itself is wrong, correct the workflow or grade as appropriate. If only one uncontrolled viewing route differs, document that limitation instead of creating conflicting grades without a defined approval target.
A practical exercise
Prepare a short approved-footage sample with a face, white title and bright window. Export the agreed master and a separately labeled review version. Have the reviewer identify the file and playback route in their notes. Resolve conversion or display discrepancies before using those notes to change the creative grade.
Before you decide
- Agree on the output workflow.
- Label review copies clearly.
- Reproduce the viewing path.
