How to Build a Claim-and-Source Ledger for AI-Written Articles
A source ledger connects each important article claim to evidence, scope and a checked date.

A source ledger connects each important article claim to evidence, scope and a checked date. It is more useful than a long bibliography when a reader's decision depends on a changing feature or plan restriction. Keep it small enough to maintain: record consequential facts and disputed statements, not every ordinary sentence in the draft.
Documentation basis: Google people-first content guidance; Google guidance on generative AI content. The recommendations below are editorial analysis and original teaching exercises, not a hands-on product benchmark or a forecast of search performance.
Which claims deserve a ledger entry?
Include availability, compatibility, pricing, export restrictions and any claim that one option outperforms another. Also record borrowed statistics and reported experiences. Your own clearly labeled teaching examples do not need to masquerade as external evidence, but their assumptions should be explicit.
What fields make the ledger actionable?
Use claim, source URL, source type, checked date, scope, proposed wording and review status. Scope should identify the version, platform or account limitation. These fields let an editor see why a sentence is supported and which part needs rechecking later.
How do you record a vendor performance claim?
Label it as a vendor claim, not an independent test. Preserve the conditions and avoid generalizing beyond them. If the claim is unnecessary to the reader's decision, leave it out instead of repeating a promotional number with a caveat too far away to notice.
What happens when evidence is missing?
Mark the claim unresolved and remove it from the factual recommendation until verified. You can describe a test the reader should perform, but do not present that proposed test as something you ran. An unknown feature is not evidence that the feature is absent.
How should the ledger support updates?
Sort entries by volatility and importance. Recheck a current-plan restriction before a stable editing principle. When evidence changes, update the affected sentence and any table or FAQ that repeats it, then record what changed rather than merely refreshing the date.
A practical exercise
Take an existing comparison and mark five sentences that could change a purchase decision. Build ledger rows for those five. If one says a tool is always free but the source only describes a trial, rewrite the claim to the supported scope. Keep the rejected wording in the internal change note, not in the public article.
Before you decide
- Record scope alongside URLs.
- Label vendor claims.
- Update repeated facts together.
