Explore Page
Updated Jun 1, 2026
The Explore page is Instagram's algorithmic discovery surface — the magnifying-glass tab in the bottom navigation. It serves a personalised grid of posts and Reels selected almost entirely from accounts the viewer does not follow. For creators under 100K followers, Explore is the single biggest growth engine on the platform.
Distribution mechanics: Explore has the largest number of ranking inputs of any surface on Instagram — Mosseri has said so directly in multiple algorithm-explainer videos. The model takes the user's recent engagement history (which accounts they've liked, saved from, watched all the way through, sent in DMs), clusters those signals into inferred topics, and serves candidate posts from those topic clusters. Speed and density of engagement matter more here than in the feed: a post that earns 100 likes and 20 saves in the first hour outperforms one that earns 500 likes spread over a week.
Why it matters for creators
The two surfaces that drive non-follower growth on Instagram are Reels (in the Reels tab) and Explore (the grid). Explore is more forgiving than Reels because it mixes formats — Carousels, single-image posts, and Reels all surface there — and rewards niche-fit even on posts with modest absolute engagement. If your reach breakdown shows most non-follower views coming from "Explore," your content has cracked topic-clustering — the algorithm has decided which interest bucket you belong in.
What gets you onto Explore
- Consistent niche signal. Posts have to cluster cleanly into one topic. Creators who post about three unrelated things confuse the model.
- High SPR and save rate. Both signal that the post earned a non-obvious vote of quality.
- Sustained early engagement. Bursty first-hour engagement is the biggest predictor of Explore eligibility.
What gets you blocked from it
Recommendation Guidelines violations — even ones that don't breach Community Standards. Posts flagged as engagement bait, sensitive financial advice, body-shaming content, or political mobilization can be removed from Explore distribution without the account being penalised. Algorithm
Sends Per Reach
Instagram's ranking metric that measures how often a post is forwarded via DM relative to the accounts that saw it. Confirmed by Adam Mosseri as one of three top ranking signals (with watch time and likes per reach) for Reels in 2025-2026.
Algorithm
Trial Reels
An Instagram feature (launched late 2024, expanded in 2025) that lets creators publish a Reel to non-followers first. Performance data decides whether the Reel is shown to existing followers.
Metrics
Reach
The number of unique accounts that saw a post. Distinct from impressions — one account viewing a post five times counts as 1 reach, 5 impressions.
