How email tracking pixels work

A tracking pixel is a 1x1 transparent image embedded in your email. When the recipient opens the email, their email client loads the image from a server — and that load event gets recorded with a timestamp, the device type, and approximate location.

This is the same technique used by Mailchimp, HubSpot, and every email marketing platform to measure open rates. The difference is that those tools charge a monthly fee. This one is free.

The pixel is invisible — it's a transparent PNG with zero visual footprint. The recipient sees your email exactly as you wrote it.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Generate a tracking pixel

Enter a label (e.g. the email subject line) and the tool creates a unique 1x1 transparent PNG URL. Each pixel has its own stats page.

  2. 2

    Paste it into your email

In Gmail: Compose → Insert image → By URL → paste the pixel URL. In Outlook: Insert → Pictures → From web. The pixel is invisible to the recipient.

  3. 3

    Check your opens

Bookmark the stats URL. Every time the recipient opens the email, the pixel loads and records a timestamp, device type, and approximate location. Refresh to see new opens.

Privacy and accuracy

Pixel tracking is standard practice in email marketing and is used by every major platform. That said, it has honest limitations:

  • Apple Mail Privacy Protection pre-fetches images in the background, which can register a false "open" even if the person hasn't read the email.
  • Image blocking — some email clients block images by default. If the recipient doesn't load images, the pixel won't fire.
  • GDPR and consent — if you're tracking business contacts in the EU, be aware of consent requirements. For personal one-off emails, tracking pixels are generally fine.

For the most accurate picture, pair open tracking with link click tracking — clicks are harder to fake and give you a clearer signal of engagement.

Frequently asked

Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no card, no monthly fee. The tracking pixel generator at /tools/email-open-tracker is a free tool — you create a pixel, get a stats URL, and track opens. No account needed.
Does it work with Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail?
Yes, with one caveat. Gmail and Outlook load tracking pixels when the recipient opens the email. Apple Mail's Mail Privacy Protection (iOS 15+) pre-fetches images in the background, so it may register an 'open' even if the person hasn't read it. This is an industry-wide limitation, not specific to this tool.
Can the recipient tell I'm tracking?
No. The pixel is a 1x1 transparent PNG — invisible in the email body. There's no visible indicator. However, tech-savvy recipients who inspect HTML source can spot any tracking pixel, regardless of the tool.
How accurate is pixel tracking?
Pixel tracking tells you when an email was opened, not whether it was read. Open rates are directionally useful but not perfect: image-blocking email clients won't register opens, and Apple Mail may over-count. For serious email marketing, pair pixel tracking with click tracking for a clearer picture.
