Caption placement must account for both the video's subject and the publishing app's visible controls. A subtitle that looks clear in an editor may be covered by a description, button or other interface element after publishing. Use the current destination preview and a phone check rather than relying on one universal safe-area number.

Documentation basis: W3C caption guidance; Canva editable video captions. The recommendations below are editorial analysis and original teaching exercises, not a hands-on product benchmark or a forecast of search performance.

Why is one fixed margin not enough?

Interface layouts vary by destination, device and viewing state. Long descriptions or controls can change what is covered. Treat a guide overlay as a starting point, then inspect the actual destination experience with representative text and the intended video ratio.

What should remain visible around captions?

Protect the subject's face, demonstrated object and any essential labels. Move captions deliberately when the composition changes, while keeping placement predictable enough to follow. Avoid solving one overlap by covering a more important part of the explanation.

How do long captions affect placement?

Test two-line cues and the longest words, not only short samples. The caption region should have enough space without pushing text into app controls. If it does not, revise segmentation or layout rather than repeatedly shrinking the font.

Should captions move between shots?

They can when necessary to avoid essential content, but frequent arbitrary movement increases reading effort. Establish a small number of approved positions and check transitions. Keep the viewer's reading path stable unless the visual content provides a clear reason to change it.

What should the final pre-publication check do?

Use a draft or preview where available and inspect the actual phone display. Confirm the opening, longest cue and final call to action. Do not assume an exported file's clean edges mean the publishing interface will leave those areas unobstructed.

A practical exercise

Choose three frames: a face close-up, a product demonstration and an end card. Place the longest expected caption on each and inspect them in the destination preview on a phone. Adjust the caption region before applying the design to the full video.

Before you decide

  • Inspect the current destination UI.
  • Test long cues.
  • Protect essential visual information.
