Proxy media is a working copy intended to make editing more manageable; original media remains the source for final quality. A proxy workflow can help with difficult footage, but it adds linking and verification responsibilities. Before changing editors or buying hardware, test whether a well-managed proxy route addresses the actual playback bottleneck.
Documentation basis: DaVinci Resolve; Apple Final Cut Pro. The recommendations below are editorial analysis and original teaching exercises, not a hands-on product benchmark or a forecast of search performance.
When are proxies worth testing?
Try them when representative source footage is difficult to play or scrub reliably on the editing machine. First rule out missing files and storage problems. Proxies are not a remedy for every crash or a substitute for understanding which part of the workflow is slow.
What must remain consistent between copies?
Preserve the relationship between source and working copy, including duration, frame rate and audio alignment. Use the editor's documented proxy workflow where available. Renaming or moving files casually can make relinking harder and create confusion between originals and temporary media.
How do you prevent low-quality final delivery?
Before export, confirm the project can access the original media and inspect the export settings. Render a short sample containing fine text or detail. Check the actual output file, because a proxy preview can look acceptable while concealing a source-linking problem.
What should be included in a handoff?
Tell the receiving editor which files are originals, which are proxies and how they relate. Include the project and a reference export. Test relinking on a copy of the package before delivery rather than assuming identical folder paths exist on another computer.
When should proxies be removed?
Only after confirming the project and originals are safely archived and recoverable. Keep temporary media separate so cleanup does not touch source files. For active collaborative work, agree on the proxy naming and storage convention before anyone starts deleting caches.
A practical exercise
Make a short sequence with detailed screen text and a spoken sentence. Create working copies through the editor's supported workflow, edit with them and export from the originals. Compare the output's detail and synchronization with a direct-source sample. The test should demonstrate both responsiveness and correct final linking.
Before you decide
- Keep originals separate.
- Verify source relinking before export.
- Inspect fine detail in the final file.
