Premiere Transcription vs Caption Translation: Different Jobs, Different Checks
Transcription turns speech into text; translation changes that text into another language.

Transcription turns speech into text; translation changes that text into another language. In Premiere, these workflows should not be treated as one approval step. Adobe documents local language-pack speech transcription and a separate cloud translation workflow. Check the selected operation before processing private footage, then review the source transcript before translating it.
Documentation basis: Premiere Speech to Text; Premiere caption translation. The recommendations below are editorial analysis and original teaching exercises, not a hands-on product benchmark or a forecast of search performance.
Why should transcription be approved first?
Translation can preserve or amplify a recognition mistake. Correct names, quantities and negative instructions in the source transcript before creating another language. Keep the original audio available so a reviewer can resolve uncertainty rather than guessing from an already flawed text version.
What should be checked about cloud processing?
Determine which feature sends material to a service and whether the client has permitted that use. A locally installed editor does not imply every operation is local. Treat transcription, translation and other AI services as separate processing decisions.
How should translated caption timing be reviewed?
The target language may need more or fewer words. Check whether each cue remains readable within its duration and whether segmentation follows meaning. Do not simply force the translation into the original line breaks if that produces awkward or crowded text.
What should happen to the original language track?
Keep it as an approved reference and label tracks clearly. Avoid overwriting the only corrected source while experimenting with translation. Separate language tracks make later corrections easier to trace and reduce accidental delivery of the wrong version.
How do you approve the final localized video?
Use a fluent reviewer for meaning and a playback check for layout and timing. Verify the exported file or sidecar, not only the timeline. If the source edit changed after translation, recheck synchronization across every affected language.
A practical exercise
Transcribe a short instruction, correct one deliberately difficult product name and then translate the approved text. Keep both tracks. Ask a fluent reviewer to verify the caution and quantity, then inspect the final export on a phone. Record which step used cloud processing in the project notes.
Before you decide
- Approve source text before translation.
- Review processing boundaries.
- Keep language tracks distinct.
